How long does the handover training take?
Our 'Gold-Standard' handover typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. We don't rush; we stay with you until you are comfortable with the boat's controls, safety procedures, and local canal etiquette.
Is steering a narrowboat difficult?
It’s easier than driving a car! Narrowboats move at a relaxed pace (max 4mph). The only trick is that the tiller works in reverse—push left to go right—but after 15 minutes of practice, it becomes second nature.
Are canal locks hard to operate?
Locks are part of the fun! We walk you through your first lock manually. It’s a simple process of opening and closing 'paddles' to move water. It’s also the best way to meet other boaters who are always happy to help.
Which side of the canal should I drive on?
On UK canals, you drive on the right. You should generally stay in the middle where the water is deepest, but move to the right when passing oncoming boats.
What is the speed limit on the Grand Union Canal?
The speed limit is 4mph, but 'canal speed' is really about the wash you create. You should always slow down to a crawl when passing moored boats to ensure you don't disturb them.
What happens if I get stuck or have a problem?
We are a family-run business and just a phone call away. Whether you have a question about the heater or get a rope caught in the propeller, we provide full support throughout your trip.
Do I need to be physically fit to operate the boat?
You need a reasonable level of mobility to step on and off the boat and wind the lock paddles. We require at least two fit adults (25+) on our self-drive hires to manage the boat and locks safely.
Will I have a map or directions?
Yes, we provide a detailed Nicholson canal guide on board. During your handover, we’ll help you plan a route that suits your timeframe, highlighting the best pubs and winding holes (turning points).
What safety equipment is provided?
Safety is our priority. We provide life jackets for all passengers (including children and dogs upon request), fire extinguishers, lifebuoys, and a comprehensive safety briefing before you depart.
